‘Fantasy Fanbase Football League’
“With the support we’ve got, we don’t deserve to be in this League”
“We are fighting above our level in terms of fanbase and catchment area”
Do these questions ring a bell? Does your team’s crowds deserve better than their level of football?
Imagine, if you will, a world where the English football pyramid at the beginning of next season was restructed. Instead of previous league positions each leagues participants would be decided by the number of fans your club had. Lets imagine that the FA, fed up of half-empty stadiums and no away fans, decided they would re-structure English football depending on how big a fanbase your club has. Now with a little bit of calculating and rejigging here is my official ‘fanbase’ football league, based on attendences so far this season until last weekend.
Sunderland and Newcastle would battle it out for the Champions League places whilst Leeds finally return to the top. Portsmouth and Southampton battle with Nottingham Forest for Championship play off places. While in League Two AFC Wimbledon sit proudly in 23rd place with FC United lurking in the upper echelons of the Blue Square Premier! Where does your team fit in? Have they risen to their rightful place or fallen like an LDV Vans Tuesday night crowd?
